Bacteria can enter your tooth in various ways such as deep cavities or cracks. When this happens, you can develop an abscess, which is when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected. The infection may be apparent to you because you are in pain or experience swelling. Your dentist may also identify the infection during an oral check-up e.g. from a dental x-ray or changes in the tooth. An abscess can cause serious health complications. If you are in pain or experience swelling, contact your dentist as soon as possible.
Root canal treatment is the process of removing infected, injured or dead pulp from your tooth. The treatment involves cleaning the root canals of the tooth and removing the infected pulp and surrounding dentin. Once the pulp is removed, the dentist fills the canal to prevent the bacteria from getting back into the tooth and then seals the hole in the tooth with filling material. A root canal may allow you to keep the tooth rather than having to pull it out and replace it with an artificial tooth. In certain circumstances, it may be recommended that the root canal treated tooth be protected with a crown to prevent the tooth from fracturing.
At Marketplace Dentistry, we encourage our patients to come in regularly for dental cleanings and check-ups. This will allow Dr. Lewinger and the staff to monitor your oral health and identify oral health problems such as infections at an early stage so that we can address it in a timely manner and minimize complications.
