What You Should Know About Cosmetic Dental Treatments

Tal Lewinger - Friday, June 08, 2018

Traditionally, the mention of the word dentist brings up images of toothache, terrifying drills, fillings and extractions. But thanks to an increase in cosmetic dental treatments, that perception is changing by the day.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is the term used to refer to dental treatments performed to improve the appearance of your teeth. But that don’t necessarily improve their health.

They are performed on teeth that are already in good health and are considered to be non-essential procedures.

Why would anyone get dental treatment if they didn’t have to?

Everyone will have their own personal reasons for undergoing cosmetic dental treatment. And they’re not all about looks.

But for many, the number one reason to undergo procedures is self-confidence. Being overly conscious of your smile can have a detrimental effect on your quality of life.

You may feel too uncomfortable to want to smile or talk to people, leaving your social life in tatters. You may even miss out of job opportunities because your confidence is dented enough that it stops you from performing at work.

What are some of the procedures that come under cosmetic dentistry?

There are a huge number of dental procedures that could be considered cosmetic, but these are some of the most popular.

The most common form of cosmetic treatment is tooth whitening. Although most people have some natural discolouration, whiter teeth look better and healthier. There are a number of different methods that can be used, from lasers to bleaching.

Or teeth straightening. With the introduction of more and more discreet teeth straightening methods such as Invisalign. An increasing number of adults are taking advantage of the new technology to get those perfect straight teeth.

For a more extensive overhaul. Veneers cover your original teeth completely. They basically involve getting a perfect-looking porcelain shell of a tooth fixed over the original tooth. They can fix the appearance of all manner of dental concerns. Such as discoloured, crooked or broken teeth.

However, because the process of fixing veneers requires ‘preparing’ the natural teeth (shaving a thin layer from the surface). Once they’re fixed, patients can’t go back to a life without veneers.

In the event of injury or decay resulting in missing teeth. Natural looking implants can be added to a person's smile to get rid of any unsightly gaps.

Is it all about looks?

Thanks to cosmetic surgery taking centre stage over recent years. The word cosmetic has become strongly associated with the aesthetic. And while it’s true that the primary concern for the majority seeking cosmetic dental treatment is appearance. That’s not to say that there are no health benefits to undergoing cosmetic procedures.

For example, in individuals that grind their teeth at night, teeth straightening can reduce the problem leaving teeth stronger. And getting rid of crooked teeth makes proper cleaning easier.

With all of the technology available today, there are really very few problems that can’t be improved or eradicated with good cosmetic dentistry. For more information about what a cosmetic dentist can do for you, get in touch to arrange a consultation today.
