What Is Tooth Decay?

Tal Lewinger - Friday, June 24, 2016

You’ve probably heard of tooth decay before, no matter how old you are. If you’ve ever been to a dentist, the warning of tooth decay can be a scary thing to think about, and shows the importance of practicing good oral hygiene, and taking care of your mouth. But while tooth decay may appear to be some ‘mysterious,’ unknown problem we’re all fearful of getting, there’s actually more to it than you might think, and it can end up being a serious problem. Instead of seeing tooth decay as a warning from your dentist, take into consideration what tooth decay really is.

Tooth Decay Attacks Enamel

We all know about the unsightliness that plaque can cause on our teeth, and you may even know it can lead to gum disease. But plaque build-up is actually the main cause behind tooth decay, as well. When the bacteria in plaque begins to build up on our teeth, it forms acids that actually eat away at our enamel.

What’s enamel? It’s a protective, hard, outer layer on our teeth that not only keep them looking healthy, but help to keep them from decay. When that enamel is compromised, it’s much easier to develop diseases of the mouth, and for your teeth to begin to decay. Once your enamel is gone, there is no way to get it back.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is generally caused by insufficient oral health care, including irregular brushing, not seeing a dentist, etc. It can also be caused/encouraged by the type of foods we eat. If you snack on a lot of sugary or acidic foods, you may become more susceptible to tooth decay, because the acids and bacteria can eat away at your enamel very quickly. To fight back against tooth decay, make sure you’re taking care of your teeth every single day, and watch what you eat - by taking the proper precautions for a healthy mouth, you’ll have a beautiful smile to show off for the rest of your life!
