What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Tal Lewinger - Friday, October 07, 2016

Many people can cringe at the term ‘root canal,’ and while it may not be a pleasant experience, it can sometimes be a necessary one in order to save a tooth, and the overall oral health of your mouth. But, for as fearful as some of us may be of root canal therapy, do you really know the reasoning behind it, or how effective it is?

When there is a damaged tooth inside the mouth, it’s incredibly easy for that tooth to become infected. Like any other part of the body, infections can be quick to grow, and spread, and any infection within the mouth can quickly spread to other parts of the body, causing potential for serious health issues to occur. Beyond that, the infection can cause extreme amounts of pain around the tooth itself.

Root canal therapy isn’t the scary or painful part - having an infected tooth can be a thousand times worse. So how does a root canal help? This type of treatment essentially will open up the tooth itself to have a look inside at the infection. Your dentist can remove the damaged area, clean it up, fill it, and seal it again. There’s no real wonder after considering that particular procedure, why it can be painful for some people.

But, consider the alternatives: If an infection inside a damaged tooth is allowed to spread, the problems you face could spread as well, and instead of fixing the tooth, your dentist could have to extract it. While extraction might seem like an ‘easy’ way out, it’s always a better idea to save the teeth you have, rather than removing and replacing. Root canal therapy doesn’t have to be a scary phrase for anyone. Thanks to modern technology, medical advancements, and the knowledge of a great dentist, you can take comfort in knowing you don’t have to put up with tooth infections any longer.
