What are inlays and onlays?

Tal Lewinger - Friday, December 04, 2015

Inlays and onlays are mostly bigger as compared to a dental filling and are smaller compared to a crown. They are mostly cemented or bonded to one particular place. Inlays and onlays are both similar. The only difference between inlays and onlays is of the location at which these are bonded. Inlays are quite similar to fillings; however, an inlay is set in between the cusps of the chewing surface of any tooth. On the other hand an onlay is designed to cover larger surface areas and they replace one or more of the cusps which have decayed. An onlay is bigger than an inlay.

Inlay and onlays are made different materials like gold, ceramics, or composite resin (It is a mixture of glass and plastic).Inlays and onlays can last for ten years and in some cases even longer periods. There are a number of factors which determine the durability of inlays and onlay. Following are some of them:

  • 1. The materials which are used in manufacture of inlays or onlays
  • 2. Forces of chewing
  • 3. Which teeth are involved
  • 4. Whether good oral hygiene is maintained or not.
  •

Mainly they serve as a solution for the decayed or damaged teeth.
