The Role Diabetes Plays In Dental Disease

Tal Lewinger - Friday, June 16, 2017

If you find out that you have diabetes, you are well aware of how serious this is of a situation. So much can go wrong if you do not get your diabetes under control. You know that this disease can wreak havoc on your kidneys, liver, and on your body’s ability to circulate blood. You know all about neuropathy that can occur in your feet and how you could even lose limbs as a result of diabetes that is left out of control. You know all of these things but are you aware of the role that diabetes plays in dental disease.

When you have diabetes, you are at a higher risk for periodontal disease. These diseases are infections that can occur in not only the gums but also the bones that hold your teeth in place. As these infections advance without proper treatment, a person will suffer from such issues as tooth loss and pain while chewing. Even worse, infections anywhere in the body will make controlling your blood sugar levels and even more difficult task. By controlling your diabetes, you can help to avoid any dental disease or do a lot to minimize the severity of these issues.

Regular dental care will also be essential to you if you want to avoid serious dental problems. This means that you should always be sure to do a daily routine that is conducive to your dental health. You should be sure to brush, floss, and use mouthwash on a regular basis. If you have had some issues in the past, you should look for an antiseptic mouthwash to help fight off infections. You should also remember to visit the dentist on a regular basis in order to get cleanings and x-rays that will identify problems before they become too serious.

You should be sure to let your dentist know if you have any health problems, especially diabetes. There is a great deal of care that a dentist will need to take to avoid any potential problems. If you have blood sugar issues, you will need to postpone any dental work until your blood sugar is under control. The exception is that if you have an infection like an abscess, this needs to be taken care of as soon as possible otherwise you will have problems with your overall health in addition to your oral health. In cases where you may need to have oral surgery, you will need to make adjustments to your meal time as well as the dosage and timing of your insulin.

Dental care is essential to your overall health. Diabetes that is not controlled can cause a whole slew of problems in your mouth and dental issues can worsen your diabetes. You need to be sure that you take excellent care of yourself through proper dental care and by controlling your diabetes. Your risks for problems will be significantly lower as long as your diabetes is under control and if your teeth are in great condition.
