Missing a Tooth? You Have 3 Options for Replacement

Tal Lewinger - Friday, January 20, 2017

Missing your tooth can not just be aesthetically unappealing, but it can also be uncomfortable for you on many levels. Whether you knocked out your tooth or had to get the tooth pulled, you may be thinking about what your next step is going to be. This means you may be wondering if you are just going to leave that space open in your mouth or get a replacement for it. You do have three options for tooth replacement that you can choose from so it can be very helpful to read about these options to make an informed decision.

One thing that you can do is to get a dental implant. A dental implant is simply a titanium screw that goes into the jaw where an artificial tooth can be screwed into it. It can also allow for crowns, dentures, and bridges to be attached to it, which leads to a more natural look. Not everyone is able to have this procedure done, so you need to see if your dentist thinks that you are a candidate for this. There are some things in your medical history that may not allow for this or you may not have enough bone in your jaw available for this procedure. It is more expensive when you consider the upfront costs but it can save money in the long term versus other options because they last the longest.

Another option is getting a dental bridge. This is a fixture where a fake tooth is placed in the bridge with crowns that get attached to the real teeth on the jaw. If you have teeth other the sides of the gap, you are a perfect candidate for this option. If your teeth on the sides of the gap do not need crowns, you may not want to get this procedure done as it is always best to leave a healthy tooth alone. It is also not a great option if you are missing too many teeth in a row. They can be expensive, especially if they need to be replaced later on, but they often do last a long time. You also need to be sure the dentist fit the crown properly to your natural teeth otherwise decay can get in between and damage your natural tooth.

The final option that is commonly used these days is dentures. These are used to replace all of your teeth or to replace a section of teeth that happens to be missing. They look like real teeth but they are able to be removed from your mouth, which can cause problems for you. Dentures are the most cost effective solution but they are probably among the least desired for a variety of reasons.

Right now, these are the three biggest tooth replacement options that you have to choose from but this industry is evolving thanks to medical advances. In recent times, there has been a lot of research about stem cells and how they can help you if you are missing a tooth. You should always talk to your doctor about which options are the best solution for you.
