3 Simple Steps to Fighting Gum Disease Naturally

Tal Lewinger - Friday, May 11, 2018

Gum disease is one of the leading dental health problems and the major cause of teeth loss among adults.

Poor oral hygiene is largely attributed to gum disease as it allows the buildup of plaques and growth of bacteria in the mouth. Once left untreated, the condition may progress and it can potentially result to teeth loss as the tissues that support the teeth become infected.

There are two stages of gum disease as follows:

  1. #1 Gingivitis – the early and mildest stage of gum disease characterized by red, swollen gums that easily bleeds when brushing, flossing or even eating.

#2 Periodontitis – once left untreated gingivitis can progress into periodontitis. Plaque can spread and accumulate below the gum line which can cause gum irritation. As a result, the bone and the gum’s inner layer will pull away from the teeth forming small spaces or pockets. These tiny pockets become the breeding ground of bacteria due to the accumulated debris which in turn can cause gum infection.Eventually, as the disease progresses, the teeth loosen up as the bones, gums, and tissues supporting the teeth are damaged.

Furthermore, a growing number of studies are linking gum disease to other health conditions which include cardiovascular diseases, stroke diabetes and dementia. Hence, oral health is important for an individual’s overall health condition.

Proper Teeth and Gum Care to Prevent Gum Disease

Since poor oral hygiene is the main cause of gum disease, it is important to practice proper oral care routine. Brush your teeth and use dental floss at least twice a day. Be sure to clean your tongue gently as well. The use of antibacterial mouthwash can also help eliminate bacteria that can cause plaque and gum problems.

3 Easy Steps to Fight Gum Disease Naturally

  1. #1 Use Salt Solution

Rinsing with saline solution is considered an effective way to cleanse the mouth and kill the bacteria which are the main culprits of gum disease.

To make your own saline solution, mix a tablespoon of table salt in a cup of lukewarm water. Use the solution as a mouth rinse, gargle for a minute or two and spit out.

  1. #2 Oil Pulling

For many years, oil pulling is believed to be a potent natural way to cleanse the mouth and keep gums and teeth healthy. The oil has excellent antibacterial properties to kill the bacteria and heal gum problems.

You can use a tablespoon of coconut oil, sesame or sunflower oil. Swish around your mouth for a few minutes. Be sure to spit the oil out and rinse with warm water.

#3 Baking Soda

With its antibacterial properties, you can use baking soda instead of toothpaste to fight gum problems naturally. Mix baking soda with water until you can form a paste. Apply in your gums or use the paste to gently brush your teeth. Be very careful though since baking soda can also be abrasive.

You may also opt for a mouthwash. Add ¼ tablespoon of baking soda into a cup of water and mix well. Use the solution as your mouthwash to fight gum disease.

Diet and Gum Care

As they say, you are what you eat. Your diet can contribute to your general oral health. Ditch out sodas, too much processed foods and sugary foods which can cause tooth decay and gum problems. Eat a diet rich in Vitamin C and E, as well as protein and calcium.
